About This Condition

What Is a Bunion?

Bunions usually form as the big toe shifts towards the smaller toes, causing the joint at its base to protrude. Over time the joint can become painful, particularly with footwear pressure or prolonged activity. The area may also develop bursitis, corns, or skin thickening over the bony prominence.

Although a bunion cannot be removed without surgery, symptoms can often be improved with the right treatment plan. Early assessment and intervention can slow progression and significantly reduce day-to-day discomfort.

Treatment may include footwear advice, pressure relief, padding, gait assessment, orthoses where appropriate, and referral for surgical opinion if conservative treatment is insufficient.

How We Can Help

Assessment & Treatment Options

Conservative treatment can often reduce discomfort and improve function significantly, even though the bunion itself cannot be corrected without surgery.

Common Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

What causes bunions?

They are often linked to foot structure, family tendency, joint instability, and long-term pressure from footwear. Tight or narrow shoes can aggravate an existing tendency.

Can bunions be treated without surgery?

Symptoms can often be managed well without surgery, even though the bunion itself remains. Footwear adjustments, padding, and orthoses can make a significant difference to comfort.

Can orthoses help?

They may help reduce mechanical strain and improve comfort in some cases, particularly where altered foot mechanics are contributing to symptoms.
