Back Pain — Biomechanical Assessment
Back pain can sometimes be influenced by the way forces move through the feet, legs, and lower body. A podiatry assessment may be helpful as part of a broader approach to managing and understanding your symptoms.
Back Pain and Lower Limb Mechanics
Back pain has many possible causes, and not all of them begin in the spine itself. In some cases, poor lower limb mechanics, compensatory movement patterns, or asymmetrical loading may contribute to or maintain back symptoms over time.
Podiatry does not replace all forms of back pain care, but it can be helpful where walking mechanics or foot function are identified as contributing factors. We work alongside other healthcare professionals where a broader care plan is appropriate.
Treatment may include gait assessment, footwear advice, orthoses where appropriate, and integration with wider management if relevant.
When podiatry may be relevant
- Back pain that is worse with standing or walking for long periods
- Pain linked to changes in footwear or activity level
- One-sided symptoms or loading asymmetry
- Back pain following a gait or lower limb injury
- Recurring problems not fully explained by spinal assessment alone
Assessment & Treatment Options
We assess whether foot and lower limb mechanics are contributing to the problem. Where they are, podiatric treatment may form one useful part of a broader management plan.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can foot problems really affect back pain?
In some cases, yes. Lower limb mechanics can influence how load is distributed through the pelvis and lower back during walking. This is not always a factor, but is worth assessing in the right circumstances.
Is a podiatry assessment suitable for all types of back pain?
No. It is most relevant where walking, standing, or lower limb mechanics may be contributing. If you have acute or severe symptoms, your GP or another specialist may need to be involved first.
Can orthoses help with back pain?
They may help when abnormal foot function is part of the problem. This is best determined through assessment rather than assumed.
