About This Condition

What Is Ankle Arthritis?

Arthritis in the ankle may develop gradually or follow previous injury. The joint can become stiff, painful on loading, and may swell after activity. Even minor changes to footwear and foot support can significantly affect how much load passes through the ankle with each step.

Although arthritis cannot always be reversed, good management can often make a meaningful difference to walking comfort and daily tolerance. Reducing strain on the arthritic joint is a key aim of treatment.

Treatment may include supportive footwear advice, orthoses, pressure reduction, gait assessment, and referral for further management where required.

Common Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the symptoms of ankle arthritis?

Pain, stiffness, swelling, reduced mobility, and walking discomfort are common. Symptoms are often worse first thing in the morning or after periods of rest.

Can an old injury lead to ankle arthritis?

Yes. Previous ankle injuries, including fractures and ligament damage, can increase the risk of joint degeneration over time. This is sometimes called post-traumatic arthritis.

Will supportive footwear help?

It often can, especially where the joint needs better stability and load control. Footwear advice and orthoses are usually among the first conservative measures assessed.
