When Andy Horwood left Leeds in 2016 to live near Glasgow, Lee Short and I took over his practice and started Podiatry Clinics (Yorkshire) Ltd. He trusted us to look after his patients, which we took as a real compliment. Since then he’s been working on a textbook — the first volume came out a couple of years ago, and the latest one is now available.
Andy is one of the most thoughtful clinicians in UK musculoskeletal podiatry. The textbook reflects that. It isn’t a quick reference; it’s a properly worked-through book on biomechanics, gait, the patho-mechanics behind common lower-limb presentations, and how to translate that into treatment that actually works.
Why we recommend it
For practising clinicians, the value is in the depth. Most podiatry students get a reasonable introduction to gait, biomechanics and orthoses during training, but the gap between that introduction and being able to confidently treat a complex MSK patient is significant. Andy’s book is one of the few that bridges it without dumbing the content down.
For patients reading this, the takeaway is more about the team behind the practice. We came up through the same clinical tradition Andy did, and his clinical thinking has influenced much of our approach to MSK and sports podiatry, orthoses and gait analysis.
If you’re a podiatrist or physio looking for a serious reference on lower-limb biomechanics, the textbook is worth investing in. If you’re a patient who’s ended up on this page from a search, the relevant link is below.
