Musculoskeletal (MSK) and Sports Podiatrists are specialists of the foot ankle and lower limb. MSK Podiatry is the assessment, diagnosis and treatment of biomechanical conditions primarily affecting the lower limbs. Such conditions may lead to acute or longer-term problems and may also be referred to as over-use injuries. Podiatrists who are trained in musculoskeletal practice are able to identify the cause and origin of lower limb dysfunction. We can therefore often help resolve many conditions that make walking, running and standing an unpleasant experience.
Conditions such as Achilles tendinopathy, plantarfasciitis, metatarsalgia, arch strains, tibialis posterior dysfunction, bunion pain, foot arthritis, shin splints, patellofemoral, and other knee pains are all conditions regularly managed by MSK podiatrists. Treatment can involve mobilisations, running and running technique advice, stability and exercise programs, shoe advice, shoe adaptations and foot orthoses (orthotics). In order to obtain the best outcomes for our patients we will often work as part of a multidisciplinary team.
